Our Project
You may think that the creators of 100 Candles have some PhD in psychology or are very experienced counselors, but in reality, we are eighth grader students trying to spark a change in our world, and are striving to make a difference. It was simply a digital media project that we took way too far, that brought us to the goal to change our world and shape our lives. It started out with the idea to incorporate something we felt strongly about, into an art installation. So we took the one of the most commonly discussed, human induced problem, and looked into the three categories that the crime could fall under. We used the three forms of persuasion (ethos, pathos, and logos) to present our work. By creating several aspects in our presentation, we were able to gain more of a personal experience within our audience. For ethos (ethics) we built a life sized silhouette of a person, with an aspect on both the front and back. The front consisted of simply a black silhouette with a red mask over the facial area. The back, however, was more intricate with a splatter painted base and and a poem constructed out of newspaper clippings. While the face was covered with a a mask on the front, the facial area on the back was painted to look like a brain. Different colors represented different parts of the brain, and black areas were meant to show which parts were disabled. For the pathos (emotion) aspect of our project; we crated something similar to a memorial for all of the victims of aggression involved in killings. For this form we created a mosaic of faces of some of the many victims affected throughout the world. The entire shape of a heart was made completely of these pictures. We also created a banner in which also consisted of pictures. This banner spelled out the words "We will always remember, Aggression Kills.". The final part in the section "pathos" was the way we got our name... one hundred candles lined the table under which the banner was placed. Each and every one of them was lit and flickered throughout our exhibition. Finally, the logos (logic) section of the project consisted of artistically made statistic sculptures, creatively showing the actual numbers and percentages of deaths and victims.
